LINCOLN, Abraham (1809-1865); FRANKLIN, William B. (1823-1903). An important exchange of military correspondence between Lincoln and two of his generals, including: FRANKLIN, William B. Autograph transcription of a letter sent by him and William F. Smith to Abraham Lincoln, [Virginia,] (21 December 1862). Five pages. * LINCOLN, Abraham. Letter signed ("A. Lincoln") as President responding to Franklin and Smith's earlier letter, Washington, 22 December 1862. Body of the letter in the hand of Lincoln's secretary, John G. NICOLAY. One page, 250 x 197mm, bifolium, on Executive Mansion letterhead. * FRANKLIN, William B. Autograph letter draft signed with initials ("WBF") responding to Lincoln's letter, Head Quarters Left Grand Division, 26 December 1862. One page, 250 x 197mm. [With:] envelope annotated by Franklin "Correspondence with the President of the United States. December, 1862".
Seven leaves total, various sizes, ranging 250 x 197mm to 290 x 189mm. The first leaf of each manuscript is housed in a frame with the envelope.

Franklin's reply is not listed in the Lincoln Papers, though a retained copy is preserved in the Benjamin F. Butler Papers.
