Charles Voisin (1686-1760), mâitre in 1710.

This model of cartel au Chinois features in the famous interior of countess Tessin's closet at Åkerö slott by Olof Fridsberg (1728-95). Now conserved in the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, the interior composition is clearly inspired by the advertising sign of the marchand-mercier Gersaint. The model was executed from circa 1745-1749, as evidenced by the presence of the C couronné poinçon on several known examples, such as those sold Drouot-Montaigne, Paris, 29 April 1998, lot 33; Christie's, Geneva, 8 May 1973, lot 17; and Sotheby's, London, 29 April 1965, lot 46.

Although few examples are categorically recorded in eighteenth-century inventories owing to the paucity of descriptions, an example of this model, with movement by the horloger Filleul was delivered to Marie-Thèrése-Raphaelle d'Espagne, Dauphine of France. This was sold anonymously at Christie's Monaco, 13 December 1997, lot 105. Further clocks of this model include one in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris (see A. Gruber, L'Art Décoratif en Europe, Classique et Baroque, Paris, 1992, p.308); another with movement by Gosselin (see P. Kjellberg, Encyclopédie de La Pendule Française, Paris, 1997, p.107); another illustrated in H. Ottomeyer and P. Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. 1, p. 118; an example was sold Christie's, Monaco, 13 December 1998, lot 336; and one sold from the Wildenstein Collection; Christie’s, London, 14-15 December 2005, lot 111.
