We are very grateful to Professor Kenneth McConkey for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.

Grace Gifford (1888-1955) was an Irish artist and member of the Provisional Republican Government, who married Joseph Plunkett only a few hours before he was executed at Kilmainham Gaol in 1916. At the age of 16, Gifford went to the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art, where she studied under Sir William Orpen. Orpen regarded her as one of his most talented pupils. He often sketched her and eventually painted her as one of his subjects for a series on ‘Young Ireland’ in 1907, for which the present work is a study. Gifford later attended the Slade School of Fine Art, London.
