Yellow jades were considered as the rarest among nephrite jades of various tones. The innate value of yellow jades in the eyes of connoisseurs throughout time is best exemplified in the book Zun sheng ba jian, written by the late Ming scholar Gao Lian, where he in the fifth chapter mentions: 'People now cherish white jade and they set little store by yellow jade, which is nothing but a sign of poor judgement.'
It is very rare to find jade vases of this pure yellow colour and lines, what the Chinese connoisseurs call 'autumn mallow' or qiukui. For an 'autumn mallow' coloured jade carving, see the finger citrus in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures from the Palace Museum - Jade (III), Hong Kong, 1995, p. 64, no. 52. The fascination with the art of the ancient past is reflected in the form of this exquisite yellow jade vase, which is based on early bronze prototypes. We can admire that the russet inclusions on the minimalist body ingeniously imitate the encrustations of an archaic bronze vessel.
