A MANCHU ARCHER'S COSTUME AND HELMET
19TH CENTURY
The short jacket, magua and skirt, qun embroidered with roundels of profile facing five-clawed dragons and flaming pearls, the kingfisher feathers decorated helmet with a gilt metal mount clear ruby coloured diamond shaped knop of a First rank military official, together with underarm pieces, front piece, side pieces and large bosses, the entire costume is worked in metal bosses, probably worn by one of the Bannerman henchmen of the head of 8 clans of China, baqi. Please note in view of the quality of the embroidery, and the fact that the red finial is most probably a replacement, it is unlikely that this was in fact a First Rank Officers uniform. More likely is that it has had the red knop added at a later date.
