12° (185 x 120mm). Colour-printed folding map. (Faint dampstain on the title, the first two leaves slightly short, short tears at the map folds, lightly yellowed in the margins.) Contemporary red morocco, onlaid cypher crowned in gilt on the upper side, top edge gilt, printed endpapers (trace of shelf mark on spine head and front pastedown). Provenance: Jules Leclercq (presentation inscription to:) -- Alexander III of Russia (binding, stamps) -- Appelfeld Gallery, NY (sold, 1997).

FROM THE COLLECTION OF ALEXANDER III AT ANICHKOV PALACE, in a handsome binding, presented to him and inscribed by the author, in French: 'To His Highness Alexander III, Emperor of Russia, respectful homage of the author, Jules Leclercq'. It was during the reign of Alexander III that the administration of the Caucasus was remodelled significantly to integrate the region more closely within the Empire.
