Lot Essay

Other examples of this centrepiece signed Thomire exist including one with a circular plinth sold Christie's, New York, 18 October 2002, lot 518 ($13,145). This comparable, as in the present example, depicts a cherub with trident seated on a double interlaced dolphin base. The dolphin was a popular neo classical motif that Thomire deployed in other designs for table ornamentation including a three piece garniture sold Sotheby's, New York, 18 November 2011, lot 47, and a pair of bronze bowls 'aux dauphins' signed Thomire, offered for sale at Koller Auctions, 20 March 2007, lot 1293.
