Château Cantemerle
After Château La Lagune on the route des vins comes Château Cantemerle, a château, like so many others, that proves the Classification of 1855 outdated. Though technically a cinquième cru, Château Cantemerle is close in quality and geography to Château La Lagune and, in good vintages, fetches 2nd growth prices. From 1579 to 1892 Château Cantemerle was owned by the Villneuve family. It was bought by the Dubos family and then, in 1981, by the Cordier family and finally to an insurance company in 1990. But it was Pierre Dubos and his meticulous record keeping that made the wine of Château Cantemerle such a delight. Ever degree change in temperature, every centimeter of rain and shift in the wind was recorded and winemaking techniques were adjusted accordingly to produce a wine of fine quality.

Macau (Haut-Médoc), 5me cru classé

"Always a favourite château, at least until more recent years. The '49 had a particulary beautiful colour and, in its earlly days (1977 to 1983) an exquisitely perfumed bouquet. One tart and one superb half-bottle before the sale of Mme Binaud's cellar in 1966..." Last tasted Sept 1996. At best **** MB, Vintage Wine
