Sometimes referred to as a Bridgewater dresser this distinctive form of dresser is in fact peculiar to the Dorset, Somerset and South Gloucestershire region. Although this example is freestanding, dressers of this general type were also built into cottages and farmhouses as permanent fixtures and characterised in having shelves with continuous sides running to the base. The inclusion of a lower shelf in this example is unusual. This dresser is brown painted and has curious black rays overpainted on to the surface, which is unusual; an earlier coat of yellow ochre paint is evident.
