AN IRISH GEORGE III MAHOGANY AND PARCEL-GILT BUREAU-CABINET
Third quarter 18th century
The rectangular egg-and-dart moulded cornice above a pair of shaped mirrored doors with egg-and-dart moulded edge, enclosing a fitted interior of pigeon-holes and adjustable shaped divisions around a shaped mirrored door flanked by Corinthian pilaster drawers, with four drawers at the lower edge, the bureau section with flap enclosing a fitted interior of pigeon-holes and drawers around a central brass-inlaid door flanked by stop-fluted pilaster-drawers, above a frieze drawer flanked by lopers simulated as drawers, with three graduated drawers below, on shaped bracket feet, the handles apparently original, replacements to the feet, the uppermost drawer with fragmentary label 'HEIRLOOMS', the two inches at the bottom of the upper section replaced and possibly altered, and therefore the top and base possibly associated

This bureau-cabinet's mirrored doors, in elegantly serpentined frames, relate to those of a George II cabinet bearing the 1740s label of Giles Grendey (d.1780) (C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1986, p. 240, fig. 432).
