I find it extraordinary that a German Count should have settled, seemingly so effortlessly, in the very French, somewhat rural, Saint-Emilion community. He and his family live at Château Canon-la-Gaffeliére. The count also owns La Mondotte which has also undergone a transformation. MB

Formerly a modest grand cru from the small commune of Saint-Laurent-des-Combes, La Mondotte has now something of a cult following. I confess that I have not yet tasted the '98, but if the '97 is anything to go by, a very deep impressive wine. It should be excellent and with an interesting future. MB
