The movement with top and base plates secured by four gilt-brass columns, florally pierced and engraved front plate with a silvered and engraved butterfly oscillating with the balance wheel, the weight-driven train with verge escapement and plain brass balance, the lead weight with gilt and engraved stylised arrow pointer indicating the time against the adjustable chapters on descent, with key drawer to the base and sliding hood with glazed panels

Following the introduction of European clocks the Japanese devised a new timepiece, the Shaku-dokei (linear or pillar clock). The shaku is a measurement representing approximately one foot - which is generally (but not exclusively) how long these clocks are. The falling weight indicates the time against a calibrated scale.
