The Whaddon Chase was founded in 1862 by 'Squire' William Selby-Lowndes of Whaddon Hall. When the artist hunted with it in the early years of the 20th Century, its Buckinghamshire and Berkshire country was known for swift and elegant hounds, deep, tricky brooks and fiendish 'doubles'; double fences with ditches on either side. From 1923 to 1940 the Master was Lord Dalmeny (later the 6th Earl of Rosebery), owner of Mentmore.
