GEORGE BERNARD SHAW (1856-1950)
An 1p. a.n. signed with initials by Shaw, of 3 lines, dated Ayot Saint Lawrence, Welwyn, Herts, 13th of May 1947, to Rev. F. Samuels, on a standard printed card which declares his refusal to be a: "speaker ... open exhibitions or bazaars ... make appeals for money ... nor do any ceremonial public work." He writes beneath: "Neither does he ask questions; he answers them -- when he can. He is in himself a Brains Trust, but very very old. Leave him in Peace" (torn with loss at upper left hand corner); together with another a.n. signed with initials, of 2 lines, dated Ayot Saint Lawrence, Welwyn, Herts, 6th December 1946, stating: "My job is to answer questions, not to ask them. I am either a Brain Trust or nothing." (2)
