Both the flowered banding to the top and the palm enrichments on the shaft feature on a pair of larchwood cabinets supplied in 1817-18 by George Bullock (d.1818) to John, 4th Duke of Atholl, for Dunkeld, Perthshire. (see: C.Wainwright ed., George Bullock Cabinet Maker, London, 1988, p.68, no.9). These cabinets are the grandest known productions of Bullock's workshop and it is perhaps more significant that the same inlay forms the edge of a tripod table that is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum and which is also attributed to Bullock (ibid., p.112, no.50)
