Documents relating to the model of the Vase de Rhodes and also to the painting and costing of this particular example, the first one to be made, can be found in the archives of the Sèvres factory. The model was created in 1859 by Joseph Nicolle, chef des travaux d'art, 1856 to 1871. In 1861, the painter, Jules-Eugène Humbert, received payments for les compositions pour vases de Rhodes and, in 1862, for la peinture de figures d'un vase de Rhodes (le Printemps et l'Automne). By May 1862, when his work was completed, he had received 2,500 Francs. The vase appears in the register of items entering the factory's Magasin de Vente, on 31st. July, 1862. and was described thus: 3 Pièces composant un vase de Rhodes, décor en or, sujets de figures Le Printemps et l'Automne.
The final price was 5,200 Francs which covered, among other costs to be recovered by the factory, a payment of 200 Francs to Aimé-Joseph Goddé for applying the ground colours and gilding, and 150 Francs to d'Orléans, for mounting the vase in ormolu.
The sale of the vase to the Commission Impériale de l'Exposition Française à Londres en 1862 is recorded on 31st. December, 1863. It may be surmised that this was destined as a gift to a person instrumental in effecting the success of the French Exhibition in London in 1862
