Album containing 111 albumen prints, two hand-tinted, including two panoramic format 4 x 10¼ in., other sizes 3 7/8 x 5 3/8 in. to 9½ x 11¾in. or the reverse, approx. twenty-five signed T. Child, dated, titled and numbered in the negatives, mounted one, two or four-per-page, several titled in pencil and fifty-six with descriptive printed paper series labels, thirty-three with In and Around Peking - A description of views taken by Thos. Child... on mounts, several with tissue guards, marbled end papers, half morocco, titled and ruled in gilt on front cover (torn), g.e., oblong 4to.; with approx. thirty-four albumen prints of China loosely inserted, one with ink credit stamp Thos. Child Peking and the majority titled in pencil on verso.

Lot Essay

The photographs by Thomas Child show views around Peking including several views of the Observatory, the Ming Tombs, a view of the Summer Palace, the French Legation and monuments. Other images included are portrait studies of Koreans and views around Korea; a funeral procession in Peking; river scenes; views and street scenes in Shanghai; an portrait of two men with a large fishing net, Shanghai; a group portrait in front of a chinese medical shop; approx. eight views around Hong Kong; an image of an unbandaged bound foot; a portrait of opium smokers, Canton; an outdoor portrait of three men visiting a fortune teller; street and river views around Canton and three images of executions. The loose photographs include several portrait studies and some images possibly by W. Saunders.
