Safavid Persia, 16th century

from Sa'di's Bustan, Persian manuscript on gold-sprinkled cream paper, each folio with 14ll. of extremely elegant black nasta'liq in two columns, within and divided by a wide pink margin painted with gold flowering vine, gold, blue and green margins between black rules, blue outer rule, headings in white nasta'liq on gold cartouches painted with scrolling vine in gold and polychrome illuminated panels, margined on blue paper painted in gold with inscription cartouches amongst scrolling palmette vine, (negligible wear)

The lateral inscription cartouches state that the book was from the library of the king, 'Abd al-'Aziz Bahadur Khan. The cartouches above and below contain futher couplets from the main text.
Abol-Mansour 'Abd al-'Aziz Bahadur Khan of the Janids in Transoxania (1599-1785), ruled from 1645-91 and was the most prominent ruler of the dynasty, reviving the royal library and atelier in Bokhara.

Another copy of Sadi's Bustan prepared for Bahadur Khan dated AH 1059/1645 AD is in the Chester Beatty Library (The Chester Beatty Library, Catalogue of Persian Manuscripts and Miniatures, Dublin 1962, no.274, p.45-6).
