The rectangular herm-tapered 'sarcophagus' cistern with bacchic-lion feet is designed in the George IV French manner and relates to a pattern published in P and M. A. Nicholson's Practical Cabinet-Maker, Upholsterer and Complete Decorator, 1826/7.
A related pair of cisterns, which also featured Ionic-capped paw feet, were sold by Mr and Mrs Ralph Slazenger, Powerscourt, Ireland, Christie's house sale, 24-25 September 1984, lot 458
