This chair's Grecian scrolled-tablet back, reed-banded legs and rail-corners of palmette-enriched acroteria reflects the early 19th Century 'antique' style introduced by connoisseurs such as Thomas Hope. It relates to 'Parlor' chair and 'Library Seat' patterns of 1805 published in George Smith's Collection of Designs for Household Furniture, 1806, pls. 40 and 49. His pattern, pl. 52, also illustrates a 'Window Seat' that is wreathed with a 'star' ribbon-band between the acroteria
