A RARE AQUA GLASS CUP

Translucent and of bluish-turquoise color, the sides rounding upwards from the base to a double-grooved band at the shoulder where the body begins to taper slightly towards the lipped rim, with some earth encrustation--3in. (7.7cm.) diam.

Compare a similar cup of this color and size unearthed in Gui Xian County, Guangxi Province in 1957 and illustrated, eds. Robert H. Bull and John H. Martin, Scientific Research in Early Chinese Glass, New York, 1991, fig. 5, where it is described as green, but further along (p. 197) is described as aqua in color. A chemical analysis showed that it did not contain lead, but was a potash-lime-silica glass, which reinforces the supposition of Chinese and not Near East origin
