This form of 'Roman tripod' splat features on a chair pattern in the Estimate Sketch Book of the mid-1790s of Gillows of London and Lancaster (L. Boynton, Gillows Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, pl. 30b), and on a set of japanned chairs purchased around this time by Matthew Brettingham (d.1809) for Soho House, Birmingham (sold by order of the Executors of the later Major Eustace Robb, Great Tew Park, Oxfordshire, Christie's house sale, 1987, lot 142).
