The censer is of a compressed globular form raised on three short cylindrical legs, enamelled on the exterior with Indian lotus blooms between buds issuing leaves, the mouthrim supporting the evenly divided rope-twist handles (enamel losses)

Lot Essay

Compare a very similar censer enamelled with chrysanthemum dated to the early 16th century in the Pierre Uldry Collection, illustrated by H. Brinker and A. Lutz, Catalogue, no. 53, together with two related examples of the period, nos. 54 and 55. Another comparable example decorated with grapes is in the National Palace Museum, Taibei, illustrated Enamel Ware in the Ming and Ch'ing Dynasties, no. 5.
