THREE CARVED 'MAGNOLIA FLOWER' RHINOCEROS HORN CUPS
17th century
The first carved as a cupped magnolia flower with six petals incised at the interior, the exterior deeply carved and pierced with the 'Three Friends of Winter', prunus, bamboo and pine branches issuing from branchwork forming the foot, of pale amber colour with mustard streaks; the second similarly carved at the interior, the exterior carved in low and high relief with flowering branches, of a warm honey-brown tone; the third deeply carved at the interior with irregularly overlapping petals, with pierced leafy branches and small buds descending towards the base at one side, the interior of a dark reddish brown, the exterior of slightly paler tone, various old damages
