AN AUGSBURG GILT-METAL AND EBONISED AUTOMATON LION CLOCK
Unsigned, circa 1680
The rampant gilt metal lion with articulated eyes and mouth automated for each strike sequence on the hour, its left paw supporting an armorial cartouche with foliate border engraving and central engraved crest, the gilt-metal chequer engraved base plate inset with a double four-hour ring with blued steel pointer, the faceted octagonal ebony and oak base with ripple-moulded panels applied with foliate pierced brass mounts, the movement with square-section steel pillars pinned to the top-plate and screwed to the backplate with faceted steel nuts, the gilt-brass plates enclosing the chain fusee with steel-capped spring barrel for the going train now with pendulum verge escapement (lacking verge staff and pendulum), going barrel for the strike now on rack system (previously countwheel) the strike sounding on a bell, the hammer with extended steel arbor with link arm to the automaton mouth and eyes of the lion
