The DateJust is well known for having been a canvas onto which Rolex unleashed an innumerable amount of variations and experiments. Among the most appreciated stylistic exercises, the collector will without a doubt mention the famed hard stone dials. Rolex experimented with a number of different materials for these dials: coral, malachite, marble, fossils and others. The present timepiece features on of the most beautiful and sought after stone dial ever produce by Rolex, the 'Onyx' dial.
Onyx is a variety of chalcedony, a form of quartz, prized for its deep, opaque black surface and smooth, mirror-like polish. Onyx offers a stark and uncompromising monochrome that lends the dial an almost architectural severity. The stone's cool, absolute blackness creates a striking contrast that was unachievable with any other combination.
