The Datejust is well known for having been a canvas onto which Rolex unleashed an innumerable amount of variations and experiments. Among the most appreciated stylistic exercises, the collector will without a doubt mention the famed hard stone dials. Rolex experimented with a number of different materials for these dials: coral, malachite, marble, fossils and others. The present timepiece features one of the most beautiful and sought after stone dials ever produced by Rolex, the 'Tiger Eye' dial.
Tiger Eye is a chatoyant gemstone of the quartz family, prized for its silky luster and shifting bands of golden-brown and deep amber that seem to move across its surface as the light changes. Unlike the dark green jasper more commonly used by Rolex, Tiger Eye possesses a warmth and dynamism that makes each dial entirely unique. The stone was paired with yellow gold cases, its natural chromatic harmony with the metal creating a complete aesthetic unachievable with any other combination.
