From a Singaporean collection
Leong Qiutian (1892-1952), native of Shun Tak, was an entrepreneur who migrated from China to Singapore. With businesses in Hong Kong and Singapore, he started his business in textiles, opening the Guang Youcheng Textiles Company in both locations and expanded into Fu'an Department Store in Singapore.
At the time Leong's department store was the largest of its kind, selling a wide range of goods in the only two-story shop in the central district in Singapore. As a reputable and wealthy merchant, Leong was honoured by many artists and was often presented with paintings to hang in the shop. These two present paintings were gifted by Zhao Shao'ang to Leong in celebration of the successful opening of his stores. The present owner is the great-granddaughter of the original owner who received these paintings by descent.
