A favoured medium of sculptors since Antiquity, bronze emerged during the 20th century as one of the most fascinating materials for experimentation among designers of furniture and decorative arts. Through an exceptional selection of works spanning the 1920s to the present day, Christie’s Paris explores the richness and versatility of this material, and the creative freedom with which some of the greatest names in Design have continually reimagined its possibilities.

From Alberto and Diego Giacometti to Ingrid Donat and Maarten Baas, alongside Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne, bronze takes on decorative, sculptural and functional forms, demonstrating its extraordinary ability to transcend eras and continually reinvent itself.

The sale also celebrates the leading figures of 20th-century French Design, featuring a remarkable Éléphanteau armchair by Jean Royère, a rare Kangourou sofa by Jean Prouvé, several mirrors by Line Vautrin and a special commission by André Dubreuil. These distinctive creations embody the inventiveness and bold vision of their makers, whose works continue to captivate collectors today.

Another highlight of the sale is a selection of works from the Parisian apartment of American collectors Marlene and Spencer Hays, enriching the section dedicated to the great French decorators of the interwar period. Following the sale of their Impressionist and Modern Art collection during Paris Art Week in October 2026, this carefully curated ensemble reflects the couple’s discerning eye and deep appreciation for French Art Deco. Through a selection of thoughtfully chosen pieces, it celebrates the refinement and exceptional craftsmanship that defined this remarkable era.

Specialist, Head of Department | Design

After a double degree in Art History at the École du Louvre and in Management of Cultural Goods and Activities at the ESCP business school, Agathe started her career in an international auction house from 2015 to 2020. In April 2020, Agathe de Bazin joined Christie's in the Design department, as Head of Sale. All these names sound like ideal opportunities to confront the views of those who are at the origin of the most beautiful design collections of the 20th century. Since her arrival, Agathe has contributed to the numerous world records that have marked these sales: no less than 11 for the Stéphane Danant collection, 2 for Pierre Chareau (in the Annie and Jean Dalsace collection), 24 for the Daniel Lebard collection, as well as the world record for a Claude Lalanne work, the 'Structure végétale' chandelier, which reached €3,740,000.

Flavien Gaillard

Global Co-Head of Design | Design

Flavien Gaillard is a key player in the international market, with fifteen years of experience at Christie's and an unwavering passion for 20th-century design. Dedicated to bringing forgotten design names back into the spotlight, he has developed a publishing programme which includes monographs on Roger Capron and Jean-Louis Avril, the latter of whom he exhibited early in his career. Since joining Christie's in 2011, he has expanded his focus to encompass all the major figures of the 20th century, including Jean Prouvé, Charlotte Perriand and Jean Royère. On a global level, Flavien plays an active role in generating interest among buyers in major names in design. He played a key role in publishing the catalogue for the first ever exhibition dedicated to the Giacometti brothers in Asia. He has made a pivotal contribution to the global success of iconic collections such as the Maison de Verre (€15 million) and Daniel Lebard (€32 million), as well as Lalanne-dedicated sales. Rediscovering an artist's entire career and renewing market interest lies at the heart of his work. He has organised unique monographic sales for Jean Royère (2017), Georges Jouve (2018), Line Vautrin (2022), Charlotte Perriand (2022) and Louis Cane (2025). These sales generated long-term market interest and set a series of world records for these artists.
