Lot Essay

This series, truly panoramic in scale, was first produced in 1853, although both the designer and source are unknown. It is illustrated in its entirety in O. Nouvel-Kammerer, Papiers Peints Panoramiques, exhibition catalogue, Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, 18 September 1990-20 January, 1991, pp. 278-279. The view of Rome includes St. Peter's Cathedral and the Bernini Colonnade, Hadrian's Castle, and Trajan's Column. The views of Paris include many of the great boulevards, the Place Vendôme, the Palais-Royale, and the Place de la Concorde. The view of London is from the South Bank of the Thames, including Lambeth Palace, Westminster Bridge, the Houses of Parliament, the Tower of London, and St. Paul's Cathedral.
