The original edition of the series by J. Doufour, Paris, appeared in 1812-1814. It was then reissued from 1815-1830 and subsequently reproduced by Desfossé and Karth, Paris, during the second quarter of the 19th century. The series is illustrated in its entirety in O. Nouvel-Kammerer, Papiers Peints Panoramiques, exhibition catalogue, Musée des Arts Décoratifs, 18 September 1990-20 January, 1991, pp. 276-277. The series depicts in an imaginary sequence a grand procession of the major monuments of Paris as follows:
I: Invalides, St.-Étienne-du-Mont, Saint-Germaine-des-Prés.
II-IV: Palais de la Légion d'honneur.
IV-VI: Palais du Luxembourg.
VII-VIII: Tuileries, Sainte-Chapelle
IX: Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel.
X-XII: Palais Mazarin, Notre-Dame.
XIII: Porte Saint-Denis.
XIV-XVI: Palais-Royale, Saint-Jacques-du-Haut-Pas.
XVII-XVIII: Panthéon
XIX: Colonne et place Vendôme.
XX-XXII: Hôtel-de-Ville.
XXIII-XXIV: Val-de-Grâce.
XXV-XXVI: Colonnade du Louvre.
XXVII-XXVIII: Saint-Sulpice.
XXIX-XXX: Palais Bourbon.
In the foreground are charming pastoral vignettes on the banks of the River Seine. The panels offered here include all the monuments illustrated in O. Nouvel-Kammerer, with small portions missing from the panels depicting the Panthéon and the Tuileries, and in a slightly altered sequence.
This impressive panoramic series celebrates the architectural heritage of Paris in an idealized pastoral setting. Such subject matter would have been appropriate for the period, with the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy and a subsequent renewal of interest in the past characteristic of the Restauration period.
