BERNARD PICARD, LIFE OF SAINT FRANCIS: TEMPTED BY A WOMAN, HE THROWS HIMSELF INTO THE FIRE TO RESIST, GRAPHITE, PEN AND BLACK INK, GREY WASH

The title of the print describes the scene with precision: ‘A beautiful woman urging Saint Francis to lie with her, he placed himself in the midst of a great fire, telling her that this was his bed.’ The subtitle of the two volume work further clarifies the nature of its contents: ‘Collection of the most notable follies and blasphemies of those who dared compare Saint Francis to Jesus Christ, taken from the great book of the Conformities, once composed by Brother Bartolomeo of Pisa, a Friar Minor in his lifetime.’ The book contains two frontispieces and twenty-one engravings by Bernard Picart illustrating hagiographic episodes from the life of Saint Francis.

Le titre de la gravure décrit précisément la scène: ‘Une belle femme solicitant Saint François de coucher avec elle, il se mit au milieu d'un grand feu, lui disant que cétoit là son lit’ tandis que le sous titre de l'ouvrage en deux volumes nous renseigne sur la nature du contenu: ‘Recueil des plus notables bourdes & blasphemes de ceux qui ont osé comparer Sainct François à Jesus Christ: tiré du grand livre des Conformitez, jadis composé par frère Barthelemi de Pise, Cordelier en son vivant’. Le livre contient 2 frontispices et 21 gravures par Bernard Picard représentant des épisodes hagiographiques de la vie de saint François.
