Nicholas Goodison published the revised edition of his definitive study on Matthew Boulton in 2002. At that time, he had not identified any surviving examples corresponding to Boulton’s drawing no. 516 (see N. Goodison, Matthew Boulton: Ormolu, London, 2002, p. 319, fig. 311). This pair, therefore, which matches pattern no. 516 precisely, constitutes an exciting and significant addition to Boulton’s known oeuvre.
