Carla Accardi è una figura chiave dell’Avanguardia italiana: è nota per le sue composizioni creative e per il vibrante senso del colore. Si è dilettata nella sperimentazione di pigmenti colorati mentre i suoi contemporanei avevano a che fare con materiali più semplici e non convenzionali, e la sua opera ha dato un contributo significativo allo sviluppo dell’arte astratta in Italia. La sua opera fu posta in relazione con i movimenti dell’Arte Informale e dell’Arte Povera, e successivamente esposta insieme a eminenti artisti italiani quali Alberto Burri e Lucio Fontana. Oltre a figurare come una rilevante icona femminile del dopoguerra, è stata anche co-fondatrice con Carla Lonzi ed Elvira Banotti di Rivolta Femminile: insieme hanno costituito a Roma, nel 1970, il primo collettivo femminista italiano.
Nata a Trapani, in Sicilia, nel 1924, l’Accardi lasciò la comodità della sua città natale per trasferirsi a Roma nel 1946. In breve tempo si interessò alla scena dell’avanguardia locale facendo parte della ristretta cerchia dell’Art Club e frequentando assiduamente lo studio di Pietro Consagra. Grazie all’amicizia che intrattiene con Consagra ha l’opportunità di incontrare colleghi artisti e altri membri fondatori di Forma 1: Piero Dorazio, Mino Guerrini, Achille Perilli, Antonio Sanfilippo – che sposerà in seguito – e Giulio Turcato. Il gruppo si definisce marxista e formalista, e concilia la politica socialista con l’arte astratta. Carla Accardi rappresenta probabilmente in tale gruppo il membro più incline a una poetica connotata dall’astrazione, tanto da essersi battuta per l’egualitarismo delle forme non figurative. Dinamica ed energica, la sua pittura è una risposta istintiva ed emotiva al mondo contemporaneo, tanto che le pennellate animate e i colori vibranti ne esprimono la vitalità.
Carla Accardi is a key member of the Italian avant-garde, celebrated for her creative compositions and vibrant sense of colour. Delighting in experimenting with colour pigments whilst her contemporaries were embracing more humble and unconventional materials, her oeuvre made a significant contribution to the development of abstract art in Italy. Associated with the Arte Informel and Arte Povera movements, Accardi’s work has subsequently been exhibited alongside eminent Italian artists such as Alberto Burri and Lucio Fontana. A strong Post-War female icon, Accardi was also the co-founder of Rivolta Femminile alongside Carla Lonzi and Elvira Banotti – together they formed the first Italian feminist collective in Rome in 1970.

Accardi quickly became involved with the local avant-garde scene – she was part of the inner circle of the Art Club and a frequent visitor to Pietro Consagra’s studio. Through her friendship with Consagra, she met the fellow artists and other founding members of Forma 1: Piero Dorazio, Mino Guerrini, Achille Perilli, Antonio Sanfilippo – whom Accardi would later marry, and Giulio Turcato. The group defined themselves as both Marxist and formalist, reconciling socialist politics with abstract art. Accardi was perhaps the member of the group who leaned most heavily towards abstraction in her oeuvre, as she explored the egalitarian quality of non-figurative forms. Dynamic and energetic, her paintings represent an instinctive and emotional response to the contemporary world, expressing vitality through animated brushstrokes and vibrant colours.
