Title printed in red and black gothic letter within an ornate woodcut border including the arms of Hagenau and the printer's device, text in double column. (Occasional small tears, one repaired, a little light spotting.) Contemporary blind-panelled calf over wooden boards with brass clasps, roll-tooled borders showing Holy Roman Emperors, biblical and classical scenes (joints split but firm, rear inner hinges strengthened, corners with some wear, leather clasps renewed with original? brass catches). Provenance: Joannis Nodrinii (1564; inscription on title) -- Euleos Paresillis (signature on title) -- Dr. Karl J. Luthi, Berne (signature) -- unidentified rhomboid library stamp.

THE PRODUCT OF TWO GREAT PIONEERS IN THE HISTORY OF PRINTING: HEINRICH GRAN AND JOHANN RYNMANN. Gran (fl.1489 - 1527) was the first printer in Hagenau, and one of the pioneers of printing in Alsace. As seen here, he printed theological texts with highly-detailed woodcut title-pages. During his career, Gran worked extensively with Johann Rynmann (d. 1522) who is widely considered the first publisher in the history of printing. Rynmann never printed a book himself but instead focused on the distribution of the books he commissioned. Only two copies appear to have been sold at auction in the last 50 years.
