See D. S. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, London, 1974, p. 349. According to Mr. Howard, there were at least three batches of this service, which would explain the minor variations found on pieces; in particular the elephants' heads can vary because of confusion between tarnished silver which can appear black, and rubbed black which can appear grey.
