AN IMPORTANT HISTORICAL CORRESPONDENCE.
Sancroft signed a declaration on 11 December 1688 supporting William of Orange and 'the Great Revolution', but after the accession of of William III, he refused to swear allegiance or to perform the Coronation, as long as James II, the 'lawful' King remained alive. He was therefore deprived of his office, with five other non-juring bishops, on 1 February 1690 and Tillotson was appointed in his place. However he continued to reside at Lambeth until he was expelled on 23 June, when he moved to his birthplace Fressingfield. he determined to preserve the Succession in the non-juring body and on 9 February 1691 he executed a deed delegating his archiepiscopal authority to William Lloyd (1637-1710), the deprived bishop of Norwich.

These letters, 35 of them written between 19 Jan. 1691 and 27 Sept. 1692, all personal and with dramatic immediacy, deal mostly in a very veiled manner with the ecclesiastical and political problems facing the archbishop and his followers.

Included with the lot are a series of 5 autograph letters from ROBERT FRAMPTON, (1622-1708), BISHOP OF GLOUCESTER (also deprived as a non-juror) to William Lloyd, bishop of Norwich, 1680 to 1703, 9 pages, folio and 4to, all with conjugate address leaf; and a letter from Frampton to 'Honest John' [Kettlewell?], 19 Oct. 1691, 1 page, folio.
