Shaped oblong and in the form of baskets, the sides and hinged cover chased to simulated wickerwork, the covers each engraved with a coat-of-arms within a baroque scroll cartouche, marked on bases and covers, the bases each engraved with scratch weights 19=11 and 18=13 - 7in. (18cm.) wide

The arms are those of Cairns impaling Gould for Sir Alexander Cairns, 1st Bt. (d.1732) and his wife Elizabeth (d.1731), daughter of John Gould of Hackney, whom he married in 1697. Sir Alexander was M.P. for Monaghan 1707-1727 and for the borough of Monaghan from 1727 until his death. He was also Keeper of Phoenix Park, Dublin in 1712. He was created a Baronet in 1708 (2)
