Burns was a sailor-artist and sailed frequently to the Grand Banks and North Sea aboard his studio boat 'Sarah' doing commissions for Harper's, London Graphic, Scribner's and other magazines. He was close friends with Winslow Homer, Frederik Remington and Edwin Austin Abbey. He lived in Millington, New Jersy until 1915 and thereafter on his boat moored on the Hudson River.
