Rembrandt Bugatti

Rembrandt Bugatti was a 20th-century Italian sculptor celebrated for his vivid animal bronzes. His sculptural language spanned Impressionism, Expressionism and Futurism, with the artist transforming animal studies into a profoundly expressive art form.

Born into an artistic family in Milan in 1884, Bugatti grew up surrounded by craftsmanship and innovation. Rejecting academic convention, Bugatti instead found his subject in the zoological gardens of Antwerp and Paris, where he studied animals at close quarters.

In 1903, he started working with the art foundry of Adrien-Aurélien Hébrard, which cast much of his works. The use of a revolutionary new wax-and-oil-based modelling clay enabled the artist to work with unusual freedom, preserving the immediacy of his touch. Its flexibility — unlike plaster, which hardens quickly — gave Bugatti time to explore the nuances of his subjects. Throughout his oeuvre, he frequently returned to elephants, lions, panthers and antelopes, with notable works including Walking Panther (c.1906) and Elephant at Rest (c.1909).

The outbreak of World War I in 1914 exacerbated the artist's personal and financial difficulties. The decline of Antwerp Zoo — where many of the animals were killed due to wartime food shortages — affected the artist profoundly. Bugatti took his own life in 1916, aged 31.

His bronzes remain recognised for their emotional immediacy, with each animal sculpture imbued with a sense of individuality. As one critic observed, ‘He saw the soul rather than the skeleton.’ In 1947, the Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp launched the Bugatti Prize for Sculpture in the artist’s memory. Today, his work is held in major museum collections worldwide.
