Born in Camden, New Jersey in 1971, Thomas earned her BFA in Painting from the Pratt Institute in 2000 and her MFA from the Yale University School of Art in 2002. Emerging in the early 2000s, she gained international acclaim for her layered mixed-media works, often incorporating acrylic, enamel, wood-panelled interiors and her signature rhinestone embellishments.
Throughout her practice, Thomas draws on 1970s interior décor, Blaxploitation aesthetics and vintage pop culture, depicting her subjects with direct, assertive gazes that challenge historical objectification. Her work frequently subverts traditional Western art-historical canons — referencing figures such as Édouard Manet, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso — to reframe the portrayal of Black women.
Landmark projects and exhibitions include Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe: Les trois femmes noires (commissioned for The Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2010) and her international touring retrospective All About Love (2024–26), hosted across major venues including The Broad, The Barnes Foundation, the Hayward Gallery and the Grand Palais. Her work is held in permanent collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Brooklyn Museum, SFMOMA and the Guggenheim Museum.
