James Turrell is a central figure of the Light and Space and Land Art movements whose immersive installations explore the physical properties of light and perception. Born in Los Angeles, California in 1943, Turrell studied perceptual psychology and mathematics at Pomona College before earning an MFA from Claremont Graduate University in 1973.
In the late 1960s, Turrell began creating his seminal Projection Pieces, using high-intensity projectors to cast geometric forms of light across room corners, creating the illusion of solid three-dimensional objects. Developing alongside West Coast contemporaries such as Robert Irwin, Larry Bell and Doug Wheeler, Turrell synthesised new theories of gestalt psychology and optics into a precursor for contemporary artists like Olafur Eliasson.
By the 1970s, he developed his ongoing series of Skyspaces — enclosed architectural chambers with aperture-cut ceilings that frame the sky, altering the viewer's perception of colour, depth and distance through controlled interior illumination. His magnum opus remains Roden Crater, an extinct cinder cone volcano in northern Arizona that he acquired in 1977 and continues to transform into a monumental subterranean observatory for celestial phenomena.
Today, his works are preserved in premier public collections worldwide, including the Tate in London, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and MASS MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts.
