Louis de France, Duc de Bourgogne, was born in 1682, the eldest son of King Louis XIV's son the Grand Dauphin and his wife Maria-Anna of Bavaria. He married in 1697 his second cousin and grand niece of the Sun King, Marie-Adélaïde of Savoy with whom he had two sons living beyond childhood. The Duc de Bourgogne, his young wife and his eldest son, the Duc de Bretagne, succumbed to a measles epidemic at Versailles in 1712. His youngest son, the Duc d'Anjou, succeeded his great-grandfather to the throne of France under the name of King Louis XV.
