Circular box, the independent cover centred by an oval enamel miniature depicting the Duc de Bourgogne, with curled full-bottom wig, wearing silvered armour and the blue moiré sash of the Royal French Order of the Holy Ghost, within a gold mount surrounded by a border of simulated pearls, on a ground of radiating hardstones panels identified by numbers engraved on the gold mounts, the sides and base with matching hardstone decoration displaying 77 various hardstones comprising numerous striated agates

Louis de France, Duc de Bourgogne, was born in 1682, the eldest son of King Louis XIV's son the Grand Dauphin and his wife Maria-Anna of Bavaria. He married in 1697 his second cousin and grand niece of the Sun King, Marie-Adélaïde of Savoy with whom he had two sons living beyond childhood. The Duc de Bourgogne, his young wife and his eldest son, the Duc de Bretagne, succumbed to a measles epidemic at Versailles in 1712. His youngest son, the Duc d'Anjou, succeeded his great-grandfather to the throne of France under the name of King Louis XV.
