A young Musician on a Balcony with a View of Venice beyond

This watercolour probably dates from circa 1840. Hunt painted a number of Negro boys and girls, whose features clearly interested him.

In the present lot Hunt has placed his subject in an imaginary setting which suggests that he might be standing on a terrace in Venice, which adds to the exotic atmosphere of the watercolour.
