2 volumes, oblong 2° (255 x 353mm). Text in French and English. Engraved dedication to Queen Charlotte, a general map of Italy and 72 plates by J. Emes, W. Byrne and others after drawings by Smith. Contemporary English, possibly London, red straight-grained morocco gilt, the covers panelled with various roll-tools, flat spine gilt in compartments, lettered in one and numbered in a second, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges (small neat repairs to spines, bookplates somewhat crudely removed from front pastedowns).
FIRST EDITION, IN A FINE CONTEMPORARY BINDING. John "Warwick" Smith (1749-1831), watercolourist, was sent to Italy in 1776 by the 2nd Earl of Warwick, previously George, Lord Grenville, his stay lasting for 5 years. After his return to England, he continued to work up his Italian material, and his Select Views includes depictions of Bologna, Florence, Perugia, Paestum and Loreto. He was elected president of the Watercolour Society in 1814. Ingamells p. 868; Lowndes III, p. 2425. (2)
