4°. Engraved arms of Pope Sixtus V on title, the shield having figures of Justice and Peace as supporters. Grotesque and type-ornament head- and tail-pieces, foliated and grotesque initials. Text endings in decorative forms. (Preliminaries misbound, small wormholes to upper margin towards the end, some leaves with laminated repairs, a few lightly browned, light spotting.) 19th-century roan-backed cloth (spine faded).

FIRST EDITION of the first full length work on Roman obelisks written at the order of Pope Sixtus V. Mercati's dedication to the Pope is dated from Cracow, March 5, 1589. On leaf Yy1r he praises Domenico Fontana whose Della transportatione dell'obelisco Vaticano was to be printed by Basa in 1590 (see lot 1560). Olschki Choix 17582; Mortimer Italian 301.
