Ferrier is best known for the work he contributed to the photographic documentation of the works of art and science exhibited at the Great Exhibition in 1851 and published later to accompany The Reports of the Juries. For this marathon task he perfected the use of albumen on glass negatives which, although more difficult to handle than the paper negative, were capable of achieving greater clarity of detail. Still interested in the quality of detail possible on glass, he exhibited several stereoscopic diapositives at the Paris international exhibitions later in the 1850s. His name is associated with that of Charles Soulier with whom he produced views of Paris in the 1860s. It is rare to find other examples of his earliest work including views of Paris. Only one other early paper print by Ferrier has appeared at auction.
