In 1970 Lennon read American psychologist Dr Arthur Janov's book The Primal Scream (Primal Therapy: The Cure for Neurosis). Lennon embraced Janov's theories with open arms and he and Yoko invited Janov to visit them at Tittenhurst Park, Ascot, where they embarked on three weeks of therapy, followed by an additional four months at the Primal Institute in California. The theory of primal therapy was simple ...It worked on the assumption that the patient had layers of defences that needed stripping down to reveal the real person. By owning up to fallibilities and frailties and confessing to oneself the struggle of childhood, particularly one's relationship with parents, the person who underwent therapy willingly would come face to face with his real self again, literally screaming away the pain... Lennon felt that he gained an enormous amount from the Primal Therapy sessions and the songs he wrote for the John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band album immediately reflected his new found emotional strength and honesty.
