The present work can be compared to The Reconcilation of Jacob and Laban offered at Sotheby's, London, Dec. 11, 1991, lot 39. A possible dating to the early 1630s was suggested for that painting, and comparison made with the Jacob promising to give Laban seven years Service in the Palazzo Bianco, Genoa, which is dated by Mary Newcome to the early 1630s. Additional similarities appear in Joseph refusing his brothers' gifts sold at Christie's, London, April 10, 1981, lot 26.
