Charles Fleetwood Varley produced very beautiful, hand-painted enamel landscapes, usually mounted by Liberty as lids to silver or pewter boxes, or more rarely as jewels. He was a member of the Varley family of Victorian painters, and he worked in the family tradition creating land and seascapes of deep, strong colours, very subtly shaded and bathed in sunlight or moonlight. His skill in enamels is shown in the soft haze characteristic of these pictures.
